Oppo Reno 8 Pro in 2023 — Still Punching Up!

The Oppo Reno 8 Pro was a big surprise for me. It’s the first Oppo device I’ve ever used and boy have I been impressed.

  • It’s beautifully crafted with an all metal unibody design.
  • It has a lovely 1080p/120hz AMOLED display that is nice and bright.
  • The hardware inside is nothing to be scoffed at either as it’s running what is also the first Mediatek SoC that I’ve tried, the Dimensity 8100 MAX.
  • Powered by Marisilicon like its flagship counterparts

There’s some bargains to be had on this device right now, but is it worth buying over the competition? For a similar price you can buy a number of Pixel’s, the Nothing phone (1) and even the Oppo Find X5. If you’re looking for an Oppo device specifically then you may be considering a Find X5 vs the Reno 8 Pro, so let’s compare…

You might think automatically that you’d be better off with the flagship series phone, but the Reno 8 Pro really does punch up!

  • The Reno 8 Pro has a nicer looking display that is also flat.
  • The Dimensity 8100 MAX SoC may not have better peak performance vs the Snapdragon 888 found in the Find X5, but it is more efficient and gives better battery life whilst still offering far more performance than is needed day to day.
  • The Reno also has IP54 dust and water resistance whereas the X5 has none.

Sure the X5 has wireless charging, better frame rates in some games due to the Snapdragon optimisations as well as the excellent cameras in partnership with Hasselblad, but it gives those with a preference for some of those other niceties a good option.

If you’re into your photography you will likely lean towards the X5 for its better optics and sensors as well as the Hasselblad features and Pro mode. However if you’re a much more casual photographer the Reno may be more appealing overall and you can still get some lovely looking shots from that 50mp main sensor.

Find X5 on the left. Reno 8 Pro on the right. Gives you a clear difference in how these phones process extreme HDR situations.

Gamers are also likely to choose the X5 but it’s worth noting performance on the Reno 8 Pro is excellent and while many games might not be properly optimised for the Dimensity 8100 MAX it brings consistent performance along with that excellent battery life I already mentioned. Compared to the Nothing Phone (1) for instance running the Snapdragon 778G+ in a game like Pokemon GO it feels much nicer to play on the Reno 8 Pro.

It’s worth noting as well that ColorOS has been an absolute joy to use. There’s a lot of customisation on offer here but it doesn’t FEEL heavy like some other skins out there.

By the way I absolutely LOVE the fact that this phone has 80w Super VooC charging. I know there are much faster speeds out there these days but to me when I’ve been using 30W it’s totally crackers. And yes, you get that charger in the box! Let’s hope Oppo keep that going in future.

The Reno 8 Pro is absolutely a phone I can recommend in 2023 and one you should be able to use for years before needing to upgrade.
