Google’s Exclusive Pixel Feature “Magic Eraser” No Longer Exclusive, What’s Next To Go?

It doesn’t seem that long since Google were marketing the Pixel 6 and 7 series heavily with a chunk of those ads being dedicated to one camera feature in particular, Magic Eraser. This software wasn’t technically new but Google managed to implement it in a way that actually worked really well in many situations and some people even bought a Pixel partly based on this feature.

However, on February 23rd 2023 via the Google Photos Twitter account Google announced that Magic Eraser would now be available to ANY phone that was using Google Photos and had a Google One subscription. This means you can indeed use Magic Eraser on an iPhone for instance. Many people were happy about this of course as most people do not use a Pixel. Many others that do felt a little short changed by Google as this was sold to them as an exclusive feature.

Now it might not have much of a bearing on the Pixel range or its sales overall in the near future, but is this a clear sign that Google aren’t willing to keep features exclusively on its Pixel range and instead will take those after a limited amount of time and make them available to all through their software? After all Google is primarily a software business, but I can’t help feeling like this means Google will never take hardware seriously enough to really make a dent in marketshare and to really go toe to tow with the likes of Apple and Samsung in a meaningful way.

I could be blowing it all out of proportion. I don’t think that I am though. Let’s see which software perks Pixel loses next…
